THE OUTSTANDING READER AWARD SCHEME 2011-2012


Aims :
1. To cultivate a book-loving ambience in school, to encourage students to take initiative to learn and pursue new knowledge.
2. To establish a school culture for students to exchange and share their reading attainments in the campus and to have in-depth study/discussion.
Mode :
The outstanding reader award will be given according to the accumulated marks of the participants.
Award :

1. The Outstanding Readerˇ¦s Cup Competition
There are Junior and Senior groups There are : winner, first runner-up, second runner-up and merit awards for each group. Students are free to join the competition. The competitors only need to choose one suitable book to read and to present their recommendations orally. There is no limit in the form of presentation as long as the presentation can demonstrate excellent reading quality.
(Prizes: Winners : a certificate and $100 book coupon, First runner-up : a certificate and $70 book coupon, Second runner-up : a certificate and $50 book coupon, Merit award : $20 book coupon)
2. The Outstanding Reader Award :
Bronze medal : 250 marks Silver medal : 350 marks Gold medal : 500 marks
Procedure for the Outstanding Reader AwardˇG
1. S1 ˇV S7 students borrow books either from the Library or the Widely-reads book shelves. After reading the books, the students enter their commentaries in the "Learning from Reading" webpage. A commentary of 50 words will be awarded 20 marks. A Chinese reading report not less than 200 words or an English reading report not less than 150 words will be awarded 40 marks.
2. Apart from the books borrowed from the Library and the Widely-read book shelves, students may also register other books or articles they have read this year on "Learning from reading" webpage. Similarly, a commentary of 50 words will gain 20 marks. A Chinese reading report not less than 200 word or an English reading report not less than 150 words will be awarded 40 marks. All Books chosen by students should be approved by the teachers first.
3. To encourage students to exchange and share their reading attainment and to establish a sharing reading culture in the campus, students can share their reading attainments publicly to teachers and schools in different ways, for example, oral presentation, drawing, story-telling, prose-reading, Power-point presentation, group discussion and craftwork etc. After the sharing, they can fill out the My Sharing Record. Then they can get 20 marks. All Books chosen by students should be approved by the teachers first. All sharing forms must be returned to the library before 15th April.
4. Students can earn 20 marks by participating in each reading activity organized by our school. A participant needs to write down her name, class and class school or sign up in a mark-sheet on the spot to show her attendance.
5. Students joining any reading-related activities outside our school can also get 30 marks. However, they must take initiative to collect evidence for their involvement and hand in the evidence to the teacher librarian for verification when they return to school. For example, they can take a picture with the speaker, get an autograph of a guest or get a stamp of the organization involved. Please also inform the teacher librarian about the activities before and after the participation.
6. There's no need for the students' applications. Their marks will be accumulated throughout the academic year, starting from September, 2010 to 15th of April, 2011. No delay of any kind is accepted.
7. The library will calculate the total marks each student accumulated towards the Outstanding Reader Award Scheme by 15 April. Students must hand in to the library all evidences (proofs of the activities and materials) for verification before 15 April each year, especially reading activities joined outside and reading awards received. In early May, students will be informed their total accumulated marks. They will also be asked to reflect on their reading achievement throughout the year.
Scoring methods :
Marks are calculated in the following ways :
1. Read a book and submit a 50 words reading report to the Library homepage 20 marks
2. Read a book and submit a reading report of at least 200 Chinese characters or at least 150 English words to the library homepage 40 marks
3. Read a newspaper/magazine article and submit to the Library homepage a commentary with more than 50 words 20 marks
4. Participate in the school's reading-related activities 20 marks
5. Participate in Book club meetings (each meeting) 30 marks
6. Participate in external reading related activities 30 marks
7. Organize reading related activities 40-100 marks
8. Gain reading related awards, including certificates for the Best 10 Readers 50 marks
9. Have completed Chinese reading reports assigned by your Chinese Language Teacher by 15th April. (Junior: 4 reports; Senior: 2) 50 marks
10. Have completed 70% of the Chinese on-line reading tasks, with at least 50% passing rate by 15th April. 50 marks
11. Have completed English reading reports assigned by your Chinese Language Teacher by 15th April. (Junior: 4 reports; Senior: 2) 50 marks
12. Have completed 60% of the English on-line reading tasks, with at least 50% passing rate by 15th April. 50 marks
13. Complete the Easter "Star" Reading plan by reading 10 articles, with at least 50% passing rate. 40 marks
Bonus:
A. Each input of more than 50 words to the HK Reading City Online Reading Club of our school will also be awarded 20 marks.
B. We welcome confident students to share their comments of books they have read with other students through our Web 2.0 Cataloguing System. However, student must take extra care in proofreading the input to safeguard the quality. All the comments of over 50 words chosen to be released to the public will be awarded 20 marks. All the comments of over 200 words chosen to be released to the public will be awarded 40 marks.
